Course Description
Islamic Sciences in a Modern Context is the College’s flagship four-year programme, designed to offer a world-class education and produce female scholars grounded in Islam’s intellectual tradition, with the requisite skills and training to guide and lead in modern society.
Apply for the four-year programme in Islamic Sciences in a Modern Context before the deadline, 31 July 2018. The registration fee is £10. Interviews will be arranged following submission of the application form. Successful applicants will be notified within two weeks of the interview.
Requirements: A Levels: ABB or any other equivalent
IELTS English Language score of 7 or above (if English is not first language)
Our academic tutors consider knowledge and skills developed outside the classroom, and we may offer places based on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. Judgement of an applicant’s academic potential and suitability for the programme is at the discretion of the College. The College encourages diversity and inclusion of all Muslim female students from all backgrounds to study at the College. The College welcomes both home and international students.
The programme is delivered through distance learning. There is also a part-time offering of the programme. An annual onsite school will be held where students are able to experience lectures and seminars and engage with other students.
The tuition for the academic year 2018/2019 for the full-time programme is £3,450. Part-time study is undertaken over a longer period than full-time study: eight years instead of four. The tuition for the academic year 2018/2019 for the part-time programme is £1,725 (instalment option also available).

Shaykha Safia Shahid is a leading scholar exemplifying Islam's rich tradition and history of female scholarship. Born and raised in Glasgow, Shaykha Safia Shahid travelled to Syria in 2003 to study sacred knowledge. She stayed there for five years, studying Arabic at the University of Damascus and the Abu Nour Institute. Shaykha Safia attended the classes of several illustrious scholars of our time, such as Shaykh Adnan Darwish, and received ijaza (license) to teach Tajwid from Shaykh Abul Hassan Al-Kurdi. She also benefited from the company of great men of Allah, such as Shaykh Ahmad al-Habbal and Shaykh Shukri al-Luhafi. She studied numerous texts under the tutelage of the great erudite scholar, Al-Sayyid Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, and was granted ijaza in major books of Hadith. Upon leaving Syria in 2008, Shaykha Safia began teaching online classes, covering subjects such as Tajwid and Aqida. In 2009 she moved to Birmingham, where she served as the Head of Education for women at the Jamatia Islamic Centre in Sparkhill. Her post included overseeing girls’ education in the children’s madrassa and training female teaching staff, as well as teaching Islamic disciplines such as Fiqh, Hadith, Arabic and other classes of the sacred knowledge. In 2012, she delivered ‘The Etiquette of the Believer’ UK Tour, covering twelve towns and cities nationwide. She moved to London in 2013 and began teaching at Hounslow, Harrow and at an Islamic secondary school in Reading. In 2014, she ran a three-day residential Sacred Way Retreat, as well as an ‘Origin, Purpose & Destiny’ UK Tour, covering twelve towns and cities nationwide. In 2015, she completed a Salah ‘Ala al-Nabi national tour, along with an international tour. Shaykha Safia has delivered talks and courses at many universities and conferences, with numerous guest appearances on television and radio, both nationally and internationally. She has delivered talks at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Warwick, Aston, York, Middlesex, Birmingham, Nottingham and many others. To help promote understanding between employees and their Muslim colleagues in the corporate world, Shaykha has delivered presentations on Islam to investment banks in the UK. She also delivered an Islamic talk on ‘Ethical Principles in Business Dealings’ at the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia. She has travelled to Australia, Trinidad, Turkey, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands for talks, conferences and events. In 2015, she was awarded a BISCA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Women’s Empowerment.
Ustadha Sidra Shaheen began her traditional Islamic education in Birmingham under the tutelage of the notable scholar Shaykha Safia Shahid. Under her careful instruction, she studied various Islamic sciences, including Arabic Grammar, Arabic Morphology, Hadith, Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic Theology and Tajwid. She has also studied courses in Logic, Tafsir, Usul al-Fiqh and an exposition of Imaam Busiri’s timeless poem ‘Qasida al-Burda’. With a keen interest in Islamic Theology, Ustadha Sidra currently continues to further her studies in the traditional sciences, and has recently begun delivering online classes in Arabic Grammar. Ustadha Sidra undertook her undergraduate studies at the University of Birmingham before obtaining a Masters in Economics from the University of Warwick in 2011. Ustadha Sidra will be teaching Women’s Muslim College courses in October in Leicester and Walsall, covering the Certificate in Islamic Creed (Aqidah) and the Certificate in Islamic Law (Fiqh) in both locations insha Allah.
Ustadha Safina Fatima has been studying the sacred knowledge under the guidance of influential scholar Shaykha Safia Shahid for many years. She began her studies in Tajwid and Fiqh, covering texts such as Nur Al Idah, Arabic grammar and others. She also attended other notable classes of Shaykha including the Shamail of Imam Al-Tirmidhi. She progressed to the scholarship course in 2013 with Shaykha Safia Shahid, and continues to further her studies in the traditional sciences. Ustadha Safina Fatima has been teaching at the Jamatia Islamic Centre since 2010. In 2017, she began teaching at Women’s Muslim College after its launch covering the Diploma in Islamic Sciences programme.
